What We Provide In addition to a culminating dinner, we provide snacks and drinks high in protein and carbohydrates for refueling. Riders may however, bring their own preferred snacks and hydration items. Speed Expectations Our speed guidelines are not intended to be restrictive but are meant to set clear expectations to meet the needs of the entire team. Maintaining a 14-mph average pace enables the support crew to effectively meet the team’s needs during and after the ride, including at rest stops, and timely arrival to dinner. Trip leadership will continue to support all riders during the event and riders are able to skip one or more of the segments between rest stops to improve recovery and/or help keep the group on pace. Recommendations While individuals are free to ride any bike of his or her choosing, through experience we have learned that road bikes offer the greatest efficiency and effectiveness for this type of ride. Road bikes are different from mountain bikes, hybrids and cruisers and are configured for traveling long distances over smooth road surfaces.
Training Recommendations To keep the group moving together at a reasonable pace, riders joining for one or more segments should be able to maintain a moving average of at least 14 mph. Riders should also be able to ride from one rest stop to the next—typically about 15 to 20 miles—without requiring long breaks. After factoring in rest stops, participants should be comfortable with an overall elapsed time average of 14 mph. This means that a 70-mile ride should take no more than 5.5 hours from start to finish. This pace allows for approximately 15 minutes of rest for every 20 miles ridden at a 14 mph moving average. Preparing for the Ride All riders are responsible for ensuring they are physically prepared for the ride. To build a suitable fitness level, we recommend the following training goals: •Ride 1 to 2 times per week, covering at least 25 miles in total each week. •Complete at least one single ride of 40+ miles before the event. Group Training Opportunities There will be scheduled opportunities to train with the group, where participants can work on fitness, riding techniques, nutrition, hydration, and group pacing. Registered riders should aim to join 1 to 2 scheduled group training sessions. All sessions will be scheduled in advance to allow participants to plan accordingly.
